So long, DualShock. Hello, DualSense.
Sony today unveiled the controller for the Playstation 5, which they call the DualSense.
It seems they focused greatly on haptic feedback and better audio features for the new controller.
“Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn’t been a big focus for many games. We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller.” -via Playstation Blog
New features include adaptive triggers that dynamically change resistance based on what a player is doing in game. For example, a trigger might be harder to pull when shooting a bow and arrow versus shooting a gun.
The controller also has a built in microphone array and speakers for chatting with friends, though Sony says that a headset is recommended for longer chatting. It’s unknown whether the controller has a 3.5mm jack for headphones.
Sony says they went through “hundreds of mockups” when designing the controller and tested the controller with “a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes.”
The new controller is being shipped to developers right now so they can began experimenting with the new haptic feedback and audio features.
